Stream Media With Drupal

Ron's picture

I’m am looking for a really good way to stream media in Drupal. I want to be able to post both audio files (mp3, wma) and video files (mp4, wmv). I must be able to publish windows formats because I really don’t want to take the time to convert all of my files; call me lazy if you will. Any ideas?

There's (predictably) a number of ways to do this. The simplest method is to use a combination of FileField + jQuery media. With that, you just upload media of any sort to Drupal via a filefield and jQuery Media automatically loads the appropriate media player. It's pretty slick. Here's a screencast on how to do that: http://www.drupaltherapy.com/node/50 These modules work with a third party setup that converts your media to flash: http://drupal.org/project/op_video http://drupal.org/project/kaltura Media Mover let's you set up your own conversion scripts: http://drupal.org/project/media_mover Also, google "drupal media streaming" and you'll get lots more ideas though I think you'll find the jQueryMedia / FileField is the simplest, most straightforward way to get moving. When you get something working, write back how it went. I've wanted to build a media-rich site sometime so am curious how it goes for you.
There's also a book called "Drupal Multimedia" which I *think* is available through Safari.
